  Admissions Process Checklist

This checklist uses a cookie to remember your checked values. The cookie will remain active for approximately 10 months. However, if you remove your cookies, your checklist values will be lost.
Steps 1-4 should be completed at least eight weeks prior to the start of the term you wish to begin the program. (Deadlines)
STEP 1: Make sure you meet the Admission Requirements.
STEP 2: Determine whether you are prepared to participate in an online degree program by reviewing VTMIT's hardware and software requirements, expectations of students statement, and VTOnline's orientation to eLearning.
STEP 3: Fill out and submit an online application to the Graduate School (a new window will open to the application website).
The application process will require you to create a user account. You will be able to complete a portion of the application, save it, and return to edit or finish later before the final submission. You may find the following information useful when filling out the form:
  • Items that make up an application.
  • When filling out the application form, you will be asked to select a campus, choose "Virtual Campus" regardless of where you are located in Virginia or elsewhere.  All VT-MIT courses are only offered in an online format.
  • When asked to select a major, choose "Information Technology"
  • Be prepared to pay a US$45.00 non-refundable application fee online by credit card or e-check
  • Virginia Students need to submit the application for "In-State Tuition" with supporting documentation. Supporting documentation includes any three of these items: Copy of Virginia driver's license; copy of vehicle registration; copy of Virginia state income taxes; copy of lease agreement or other document verifying residency in Virginia for at least a year prior to enrollment; copy of visa; copy of I-94; DD 2058 military leave and earnings statement.
STEP 4: Two official transcripts are required to be sent directly from your college's Registrar:

Submit one official transcript to:
Virginia Tech
Graduate School Admissions
Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown
Blacksburg, VA 24061
Submit a second official transcript to:
VTMIT Program Office, Room 361
Northern Virginia Center – Virginia Tech
7054 Haycock Rd
Falls Church, VA 22043
The online application will generate a reference form directly to those reference writers listed on the application. (References are optional.)
STEP 5: Decision notifications are mailed 4 to 6 weeks after admissions materials are received.
Once you have been officially accepted into the program, follow steps 6-10.
STEP 6: Create a Virginia Tech user account (called a PID) at https://my.vt.edu/mdsAuth/start.html. Your PID is a key to your presence at Virginia Tech and you will need it to access your course websites, your student records, library research materials, and more.
STEP 7: Set up your email software to begin checking your new Virginia Tech email account (yourPID@vt.edu). You must check this account regularly as Virginia Tech will use it, even if you request otherwise. See VT Computing - Email for details and assistance. You can also check your VT email online using webmail or have your email forwarded to an alternate address.
STEP 8: Contact the program advisor at vtmitinfo@vt.edu or 703-538-8384 to begin developing your plan of study. (Your plan of study is an official document outlining the courses you plan to take and their sequence. It must be signed by your program and submitted to the Graduate School prior to completing fifteen credit hours in the program.)
STEP 9: Refer to the Graduate Honor System and understand that it applies to all graduate work submitted for credit.
STEP 10: Visit the VTMIT Student Support Site to learn about course registration, academic schedules, university support resources, and more. This website will serve as your program homepage while you are taking classes.
